Help! flocking horses..where do i get stuff?

Hello i have been flocking horses for the model horse hobby for a number of years. i use 3mm german glass eyes, and mohair for the manes and tails. the example you see here is only two inches tall. hope i can figure out how to get the image in here.. i use a plastic horse body and remove the seams manes and tails paint the figure and then use a glue like 'Stop Fraying' paint each section and put the KEns Kustom Fuzzy flock on by hand. i will brush off the excess with a toothbrush the next day and sometimes have to do it again as much as 3 times. there MUST be a better way! i want to try and restore some of my vintage Putz Wagner Kunstlerschutz German flocked animal figures. i want 'Bristly' flock like your Gi joe heads have, NOT this velvet dust that im currently using. Every thing i find is woodland senics grass colors. i need horse colors.. black, white , grey, browns...and a good glue for it. where can i find this 'bristly' flock and what glue is better than what im using? I sometimes use a funny thing for flock that works.. the Topik atamizer. it was designed for balding men to squirt this dusty flock into thier scalps, looks like a perfume atomizer. works great. any info on where i can buy or order animal or human hair colored flock and glue would be much appricated. thanks [/img]

I would contact Jill at Donjer. Let her know that you want GIjOE 2mm flock in the colors your need (based on what they make and using their color chart) Note: the flock they have to order direct from the website is 1mm- the very short kind you already use.
The 2mm is a special order which you can make by calling them or email. Link is on the Flocking Links page.

Also you can find the Nyatex adhesive link and contact them for help with glue.

I have noticed that some have hand held flocking machines for sale on ebay and the web lately running from $30 to $200 so it's getting easier to get into flocking.

Thanks Ray..i found a website in Europe that has 4mm white ''snow' flock, i may be able to use for horse feet and manes. i will contact her. does that glue company sell 'small' ammounts (8 to 12 oz?) i have applied the flock by hand in small pinches of with a toothpick for detail (see my facebook post) and have been looking at the e bay hand held devices. what i see there though is you have to place a pin on the object you are flocking to create a ground in the wet glue. my figures are hard plastic, and not sure if that would be fesable as it would cause damge to the figure. can it be used withtout the wire alligator clip and pin ground?

You can use aluminum tape and clip to that or swap out for a bigger clip that can clamp around a leg etc. Also you can flock over a grounded pan or tote lined with foil. At first the fibers will be scarce, but once you get enough on there it will basically ground itself to the foil. What I do on 1/6th size animals if break them up into parts using the natural lines of the figure.
Yes they sell the glue in 2 quart batches (a part A and B) You can ask for longer or shorter cure time. Also polyurethane glue like elmers ultimate or gorilla glue can work if applied super thin. IF it’s applied thick it’ll foam and ruin the flocking. So, keep it thin.
Then there is Slickthane that can be used as adhesive. sscoatings.net/slickthane-info.htm

jill today lovley gal! she explained alot to me about what has to be done. i am fw your u tube video on how to make a flocker to my dad, who is a retired electronics draftsman and repair man. he can surely make me one like yours in the video. the glues you mention.. i need one that will not yellow over time.. thats the problem with elmers it turns brown over the years. i need one that cures and stays clear, and if it dries non shiny thats desirable as well.

Thats a tough one because many I've seen either are amber or do yellow over time. If your not worried about waterproof acrylic adhesives could work well for you- plus you may be able to get them in a flat finish. Nyatex has all kinds. They work with the auto industry so they know their stuff. Plus they will do sample testing to help you out.
