I was going over 4 vintage Sea Adventurers under a huge magnifying glass in some good natural lighting and I noticed something in the pattern of the old Rayon flock. It almost looks like that gave the head a quick run through either black or dark brown and over flocked with the Sea mix. Now I have seen this pattern on our friends restoration work, but I don't think I've seen it in any of my reflocks. Granted my reflocks will be tighter and neater that the vintage flock because of the Cabinet flocking.
So I'm going to put a black/brown mix in one cabinet and the new Sea mix in the other cabinet and try a quick spin in the black/brown and then finish of in the new Sea mix. Then I'll try the same with two hand helds to see if which if any come closest to vintage lay pattern.
I have learned a few things from doing so many flocked heads. Many of the flock issues that Hasbro had were just poor quality control because I have seen many Joes come right out of the box with kind of a mullet style hair and this usually happens because the flock felted and rather than redo all the heads they must of had someone push the flock in lightly with a thumb or maybe a shot of air or it just could be because of neck grounding. The flock will want to point to wards the ground- so say the neck is grounded- you'll see the flock around the back of the head point down. In some rare cases when RH and temp. are just so, you could even see the flock split or part in places depending on charged fibers pointing in polar opposite directions. I've seen this on beards vintage and reflocked. The beard just wants to go two different way at the center of the chin.
Yeah, I pretty much think, talk, dream, do, sleep flock. Now with the added task of flock prep- I close my eyes and see flock patterns and color patterns.

Oh and take if from me, Rayon flock is more forgiving on R H and air temp., but it can get moldy I've watch a whole batch become useless because of mold. I wonder if I keep it in the Freezer??? hmmmmmmmm? Nylon doesn't seem to do this at all.
