I spent some time reading this whole discussion and have to say that many of them were right.
I remember pulling heads off in the store and sticking them on other figures. At the time most if not all coffin boxes had two pieces of tape on the bottom and a thumb nail was enough to split that tape. I’ve switched heads and in truth put a few in my pockets at times to stick on my balding Joes at home. So at least in Rhode Island many Joes had head swaps because I also remember opening some boxes and the heads were already swapped out... leading me to believe that other kids were doing the same.
At some point the boxes on the shelves had a shrink wrap on them and I was caught by a lady in ANN & HOPE while trying to open the shrink wrap so I could make my hard hands Joe have KGF grip. I still remember her raspy voice saying, “Get away from there you little bastard before I call the security guard.”
You know I saw that lady years later in the same damn store and at 18 years old I looked away from her… lol! I suppose a kid today would have a bunch of 4 letter words for her or worse, but back in the day you knew that what you were doing was wrong so you didn’t push the situation.
Mind you the head swapping started because my friend was given a Talking Commander as a gift and it had red hair. My uncle (just a teen at the time) said, “hey man, like, pull off a red head and put it on yours… man.” Lol, everything was “ACE” or “MAN” “Man, that’s Ace” heh!
So we did.
I would have posted this over at the trenches, but the thread was closed.
