Hi - I've only recently started collecting and repairing vintage action man figures, I've tackled most things but would really like to be able to do a passable flock repair or complete re-flock. So, the ion generator is on it's way (not easy to get in the UK due to ROHS laws) in readiness to build a cabinet. One question I have is if there's a set distance to aim for between the electrode and the ground plate ? any advice welcome and I'll keep you posted with my progress. Thanks, Dave

Depending on the flock and humidity the distance could change slightly. Darker colors tend to jump better so you could go anywhere from an 3 cm to 5 or 6 cm (even higher at times). On many light colors and whites (these tend to chain together end to end (this is due to a lighter or even different finish treatment placed on the flock) some treatments used on darker flock fiber have chemicals that stain lighter colors if things like iron are present in the treatment solution water. Also some tannins (used in treatment for electro-static finish) can stain whites or light colors. To deal with this I've always used a heavy gauge wire 12 or 10 that is attached to the High voltage out and then to the electrode. I used this because I can bend the electrode up or down depending on how well the flock is jumping in the static field. Currently, I've been using kind of a faucet type been which has worked great. I'll post an example shortly. I have to make one up for you to see.

Ah - ok, so perhaps if I can figure out a way to make the gap adjustable (some kind of wind up/down mechanism like your bend up/down) that would be best ? to be honest, UK Action men are mostly blonde or dark brown, not sure I'll use white or grey. I can see I'll be asking for a lot of advice - mostly I hope to match the original colours rather than do custom but I understand that the original flock varied a great deal ...... not sure what gauge 10 or 12 means - thanks - Dave

10 or 12 is just some heavier solid copper house wire. I'm not sure what it would be called in the UK. Same goes for the wiring. I believe it's different in the UK- not sure. This means that you will have to research the wiring needed for the UK. The pic shows a very basic idea of what I mean. Yes most of the AM heads I've done had a very simple color mix to them, but I've been told by flockers in the UK that they do come across the GIjOE color mix from time to time. I've ordered flock from the UK- www.flocking.biz/index.htmlThe flock from DCA is awesome. Hey maybe Action Burt could chime in here on the best colors for the vintage Action Man look. Forum Member sparklebudgie was trained in flocking by Action Burt he may have some tips for you. It could save you some time and money. Attachments:
