This is my Holy Grail type hairline. It’s the hairline that I would see when I opened up my new Joes as a kid and the hairline that I have seen most times when opening tape sealed hard hand figures as an adult. Sometimes the hairline would be a little different in thickness, but the basic angles were the same. This is the type of hairline I love to do in a reflock, but sometimes the old glue lines don’t allow for it. Also check some old print ads and you will see this classic hairline. Attachments:

Samples! This Reads Kung Fu Grip, but none of the figures in the picture are KFG... IF you look close you see the (A) style I talk about. Attachments:

For some reason this has become a popular hairline. Most times this glue line is because of play wear or someone trying to even out a worn flocked head that has lost some on one side so they strip away a little on the other to match it. I think it became popular because of the many old Joes floating around with this type of balding. The head still will have enough hair, but it’s obvious that it’s worn. Some who do not remember or were not around back in the day may end up believing that this is the proper hairline for Joe. This hairline has also become the staple for the reproduced Joes. When one of our friends got a KFG Joe and brought it out for us to see (1970's)we flipped over the super thick beard. It was super full, very high and most times it even covered some of the scar. The sides were very wide and at a time when beards were king (anyone in the 70’s with a big beard was the coolest to us). The only thing we didn’t like was the floppy wrists after you played with the KFG Joe for a week or so. It’s funny I see people talk about wolfmen or wolfy flocked. Well during the KFG days the more wolf-like your flocked heads were the cooler they were. Attachments:

For every 10 Action Man heads I’ve owned over the years about 7 or 8 would have this type of hairline. Many request this for their reflocks on eagle-eye heads because of the eagle-eye joe ad from the back of comic books, but if you look at that eagle-eye ad you quickly see that it’s just a proto-type normal head with moving eyes that were hacked into a normal Joe head. No eagle-eye head ever really looked like that ad. Instead what you got was a bug eyed Joe who looked scared or cross-eyed at times. Attachments:

Ray, All the joes that I own all have different beards. The employees at Hasbro applied the glue to which ever way looked the best for them. Each figure had his own look and personality. When re-flocking you pretty much have to follow the glue lines or make the beard fuller.
I agree with the eagle eye joe was creepy at times and didn't look like the ad.

For me it depends on the head and the glue line. Some look awesome with a thick beard line and others look better with a thinner line. Most times a pale color head would look better with a thin or angled hairline, but it's just not set in stone really. At the time of Kung Fu Grip big woolly beards were everywhere. As kids we saw my Dad, uncles, and almost every man with a full beard. My brothers and I even used marker to make fuller beards on our GIjOE Halloween masks so we could be KFG Joes. This may be why I associate the thick beards with KFG Joes. I call the sharp angled beards my Holy Grail because that's how my first Fuzz heads looked. It's a memory that has stuck with me because I would draw GIjOE all the time when I was a kid and would copy the Joes I had. The eyes on those Joes were soft and smoky. Later when muscle Joes came out we noticed the skin on the body and face was tanned like big jim and the eyes were really crisp and bright. I even remember that the hair color shade of my first Talker was more of a purplish brown and the next Christmas the Land adventurer that was under Gram-ma's tree had a cool mix of yellow, black, red, and I'm finding now after studying this so much as an adult orange, tan, etc. Then in discussing this stuff with others in the know. I found that much of this mixing was on purpose to prevent copy cats from having the same on their knock off figures. I've always assumed that the color shades were do to mixing what was around, but it's coming to light that this is not the case. Same as with the scar and inverted thumb nail. There is just a lot to it and fun to talk about. Ray Flock Concepts

I've found that sometimes with the flocking you are bound by the previous hair line, sometimes a guy will want a little less wolf and a little more walmart. Personally I like the wolf style nice and thick, those are the heads I'm most happy with. Thing is you can change the look of You Joe just be altering the hairline a little bit, give him a slight widow's peak or a little thinner on the beard at the jaw line. Something like that really gives them some character, you know, like putting a goat-tee on Spock.
