Looks like it's just a few tweaks away now! Can't finish today, but will keep you posted! No brown used in this mix at all! Attachments:

Looks great! I wish I could see this in person. It really looks like some of my late original Land adventurers flock. Some of the ones I have look to have yellows and reds in the brown mix. I've gotten close to the original look by mixing reds and yellows, but the neon may be the answer. I may need to get some an experiment as well.

Almost there. A few more tweaks. The neon brings the yellow right out. I need to neon the red also. at that point it will be undetectible for many L A shades. Attachments:

On a side note many have asked for the more orange shade S A which they are used to so this was a test run of that concept. A little tweaking and it should be perfect. Attachments:

Ray, The flock looks excellent! I think the mix is right. The yellow stands out on the Land Adventurer as it should. I've been trying to get that look for awhile. I've come close, but your mix looks correct. Good job!

You may remember a long while ago in one of my long ranting emails that I mentioned neon colors or a slightly different size thickness. In this whole thing if I just trusted my gut more it would have made for an easier time. Now being into this from the ground up I have no problem holding my own with suppliers pushing the wrong thing. It may sound arrogant, but it's not meant to be. In the past (being green) I was more accepting of what I was told verses what I felt was right. I also have been trying to pull that yellow color out more and it just wasn't working. Now being a bit more color confident I think all the vintage colors will be just the way I want- plus input from members and others into flocking helps. I know I don't like to settle for good when I know better or bests is possible. I've said before that I am my biggest judge and I'm sure it's that way with many of you also. From doing this each of us know the limitations the we want to overcome and I just continue to push because I've seen (from my teacher) what can be done. below is a pic of my progress and goal. Well I think your on the correct path with the neon colors. That was the Fleck I have been looking for in my GIjOE flockings, that is why I like the "dusting" technique at the end of the flock job. it seemed to bring out that fleck I was looking for...the neon colors do that in a much better way. Keep up the good work. Remember to always listen tot that little voice...it's astonishing how often it's right!

This of course is for base color. From there I think any of you could mix & match until it suits your taste, but I think it's a solid starting base. I tend to alter the base mix while flocking.

Once I get the neon red it'll be a near perfect. In hand it looks dead on, but the camera doesn't pick up the red I'm currently using, enough. Next will be to use a lighter neon yellow because some heads have an almost cream like yellow fleck to them. My thought is to try adding a brightening agent like they use in making laundry detergents or I could go with trilobal flock which is shaped like a octagon and reflects light. So much more to it than just mixing some batch flock. I can see why others get to 200 miles from the ball park. I'm shooting for the batters box if I can. Attachments:

Ray, I think you've done it. It looks right to me. Can't wait to see the neon red with this mix.

Yea, I think the neon red is going to bring it right there dead. In outdoor light you can see the red better, but my normal colors were all of the same brightness so they blend instead of stand out. I'm very excited to see the red also. Ray

It's looking bang on to me. I think you are most definitely in the batters box if not at the plate. I can only applaud your efforts on this project ;D Thanks for all the update pictures, they are great!

Next round. I have a small problem with my Air Adventurer mix. See there is the perception of what we think it looks like and the reality of what Hasbro flocking did look like. I've always made it a bit lighter than I wanted because for some who have nothing but photo's to go by it would look right to them, but most of us who have been looking at these heads for years and years see sort of a different color look. So with this testing I am going for the real look of most Air Adventurer/ Astronaut flocking and so far it's going very well and maybe a few tweaks away! Note though we are dealing with Nylon -vs- Rayon and new flock -vs- old flock! Also I flattened down the test flock a bit to match the flat flock on the vintage head. Attachments:

More pics just sitting on the bench! My goal is to shoot for "Holy shit" -vs- "hey nice" Now if I could get the same size/color in rayon flock (without mold worries in storage) I could pull off a perfect match like I have seen done by private reflockers. Attachments:

I know what you mean when you said "See there is the perception of what we think it looks like and the reality of what Hasbro flocking did look like." Now maybe it's the lighting but I find the color match to be real good in test pic #1 & #3 In test pic #4 the colors look bang on...as in the "HOLY SHIT" yo were looking for, but going by the first 3 pics I'd have to say that the new mix needs a little bit of that dark fleck that the old flock has...well that is to get the perfect match for that particular head that you have there. As for me I like the flocking that has that stand out fleck in it. A dark fleck in the light colors and a dark fleck in the light colors, but that is just a personal preference, and it is what I try to do with my vintage flocks. Don't get me wrong...the job you are doing is great and if you stopped here I'd be more than totally happy the available colors, but because you like to take that next step and say the two most dangerous words in the world..."what if..." that is what makes change happen and that is what you are doing with the flocking and I'm just giving you my two cents on the colors(as a color blind guy btw). When all is said and done you will be on top of the mountain crowned as the flock king. Keep up the good work the rest of us flockers appreciate it!!

Like you said for this shade of vintage head, but we know the shades are different from production run to production run. Take the vintage astronaut in the pic's. It's a very orange shade, but I have others that are more ash blonde with lots of dark flecks. I like the 2 cents because it pushes the envelope and raises the bar. Part of my continued testing and re-judging the base colors is spurred on by wanting something even better. Everytime I think I could rest and say, "yea, that's damn good!" I get a new head in the mail with an even better shade I like or a spot repair that drives me nuts to match for someone, but in the end I get it and the client flips and say's, "I can't even tell where the rub was." I think I just may end up with at least 4 shades of each mix Land, Sea, and Air. So far I've been keeping the shades of each mix separate. The Key with this test mix is I only used one of my colors in it and the rest are commercially made flock imported from the UK which has the right size and thickness, but I wish they had one more color "cream" that makes the mix possible without turning greenish or too golden.
