A friend and I had a little discussion about Hasbro’s flock mixes and a point was made about Hasbro using whatever was around and mixed it. After thinking about this I decided to run a little test.
Side note:
Those of you that have bought the kit lately get a bag of practice flock. Now the colors of this may vary here and there, but anyone who has seen this flock could agree that it’s a horrid mix of colors and this is because it is exactly what it appears to be- all the left-overs from each days flocking. I used to save all this leftover flock and re-dye it brown or even dye it yellow to make the rust type color for the Sea Adventurer base- since the yellow dye will turn the white, cream, and raw white three different shades of yellow- then it turns the yellows to orange, and the oranges to reds and so on for each color that’s in this mixed up batch.
The Test:
After all this time I’m at the point where I’m not afraid of the flock. By saying this I mean (and others can identify with it), I am not afraid that I’ll ruin the whole batch playing around with color mixes because for the most part I can mix it back to almost anything (other than back to pure colors).
Also know, I like doing tests on various things, but most times I won’t take a whole day doing them. The practice flock does look like a hopeless mix of everything, but by adding some yellow, orange, whites, creams, etc. this hopeless mess came back to life.
I flocked some samples of my results- again not the best pictures, but I think you can see what I’m talking about. I also forgot to snap a pic of the practice flock mix yet, but many have seen it and while ugly it does it’s job of helping those new to flocking to practice without wasting the good colors, and now you could even use it with some tweaking.
